question about a Weckl lick

It's not a "triplet feel," they ARE triplets. Just set a click and play the phrase in eighth note triplets. Pretty soon you'll here the phrase, then slow down the click and try them in sixteenth note triplets.

so i tried this lick while practicing and it sounds pretty cool but it doesn't seem like a common weckl lick to me. maybe i'm hearing it wrong. are there any examples on recordings where weckl plays this lick?

It's all over his first three solo albums ("Masterplan," "Heads Up," and "Hard Wired")....sorry, I don't have any specific tracks or timestamps off the top of my head.

That's a great lick....especially the way he plays it. It's his own personal blushda.

thanks alot! how do u actually go about using that? i can use that in solo.. but i don't really know how to implement the 9 into my normal playing. do u just add it in like normal double stroke rolls? as in like 5,7 9?

If you play the phrase as written, it takes one measure in 4/4. So theoretically you could use it anytime you needed a one-measure fill (tempo permitting). I guess it's up to you to decide when and how to use it, but it is a bitchin' lick.

I remember when I took my first or second lesson with Steve, he busted out the nine and I flipped out. "That's the Weckl lick!" It's one of the coolest ever.
